Manolo Laguillo

Madrid,1953

Photographer. His photographic career began around 1975 and extends uninterruptedly to the present day. He is a reference in urban documentary photography because of the persistence of his descriptive style. Portraying Barcelona, its surroundings and its transformations from an architectural and urbanistic viewpoint is one of his most important concerns.. His photography could be characterized by intimate documentary poetry. In the Mexico series,1994 approaches the surroundings of Canada (Avda. Insurgentes 300), a building that at that time was well known, and which is now abandoned. Laguillo studied Philosophy and Germanic Studies at the Universidad de Barcelona. His dissertation (1984) focused on Walter Benjamin and his PdD thesis investigated the concept of authorship in photography. Laguillo has made over forty solo exhibitions including Barcelona 1987-1997, MACBA, 2007; Razón y Ciudad, Museo ICO, Madrid; and others at Galería Casa sin fin (Madrid/Cáceres), from 2013 to today. Recent photographic projects include Japón (2014), Lavapiés (2014) and Las Provincias (2014-2015). His interest in the technical and photographical aspects of photography has led him to write four different books on aspects largely missing from the bibliography of the medium.

Laguillo’s work can be found in the collections of the Museu d’Art Contemporani de Barcelona (MACBA), Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya (MNAC), Centro de Arte Dos de Mayo (CA2M), Museo Universidad de Navarra (MUN), and Fundación Foto Colectania, and other public and private collections in the US and Europe
